Like so many heroes and villains, Captain America and Red Skull have done the usual dance for as long as anyone could remember; Skull coming up with an evil scheme, Cap thwarting him, the Nazi loyalist escaping and vowing to return with an even more devious plan.

The Red Skull has been presumed dead more than most throughout the years, but as part of Cap’s Hydra heel turn, the Sentinel of Liberty put a decisive, deathly stop to his longtime foe.

Initially working underneath Red Skull, the now-totally-evil Captain America saw a perfect opportunity to challenge Skull for the leadership of Hydra. Why was this the perfect opportunity, you ask? That would be because Johann Schmidt had just come out of surgery to have parts of Professor X’s mind removed from his noggin’.

Seeing Schmidt in this weakened state, Cap easily dispatched of Red Skull; killing him off by throwing Skull out of a window. And it was only mere minutes after this that Madame Hydra would turn up to instil Captain America as the Supreme Leader of her rejigged Hydra High Council.
