10 Worst Things Comics Have Been Blamed For

9. Illiteracy

Just as Sofge and others argue the comic-book adaptation is crowding out "real" sci-fi cinema, there are still plenty of people who feel that comics reading is crowding out "real" books. But the heyday of such sentiment was in the 1940s and 1950s, thanks to the most famous comics-blamer of all time. We're talking about Fredric Wertham, the psychologist who essentially blamed all society's problems on the entertainment consumed by its youth. Wertham began his research in the 1940s, before television, so his primary target was the comics, though you can find his spiritual successors in those who insist the only problem with modern society is its violent, degrading movies/video games/music. He was an early example of a so-called "expert" who blithely ignored or manipulated the scientific method to get the results he wanted to see, a breed sadly still familiar to us today. J. Jonah Jameson would've loved this guy.
