Ironically, being almost killed by one of the Batfamily is, for the Joker, kind of worse than actually being killed - because at least he knows he's forced a hero to break their code by killing him, which usually appeals to his sense of humor.

This is exactly what leads the clown to goad Nightwing into triyng to kill him in the Joker: Last Laugh. Though the criminal actively wants to die via Nightwing - because he thinks he has a tumor that will kill him anyways - it still doesn't exactly look like a cakewalk when he gets absolutely pummeled by Batman's first ward. Nightwing beats the clown literally to the point of death, with the clown having to be brought back from the brink via a spot of superhero mouth to mouth.

Given it turns out the tumor the Joker was worried about was actually a lie made up by a doctor who hated him, you have to wonder if he regretted getting the stuffing beaten out of him for no reward.
