10 Worst Things The Spectre Has Ever Done

3. Spectre Failed To Stop The Great Darkness

Spectre Jim Corrigan
DC Comics

The Great Darkness is the dark reflection of the Presence. Since the dawn of creation and the violent beginning of the Omniverse, the evil has slumbered until the universe-shattering event called Crisis on Infinite Earths.

A cult known as the Brujeria awoke the Darkness, hoping to destroy the Presence and reshape the world. Street magician John Constantine and plant elemental Swamp Thing have worked for some time to stop the Darkness from awakening, and were forced to gather others to make a more direct attack when it did.

When the Great Darkness gained consciousness, several of the Earth’s heroes tried to battle it. John Constantine gathered a group of powerful magical heroes at the home of Baron Winters to oppose the Great Darkness. Zatara and Sargon were burned alive, and Winters was driven insane in the effort. The Spectre grew to a vast size to engage the Darkness directly, but was defeated easily as well.

The Swamp Thing entered the Great Darkness and tried to explain to it that good and evil could not exist without the existence of the other. The Darkness reached out its hand to Heaven and the Presence reached his hand back. The two embraced and they were locked in a truce held together by the existence of the single, unified universe.
