10 Worst Things The Spectre Has Ever Done

2. The Spectre Misjudged Parallax’s Hold On Hal Jordan

Spectre Jim Corrigan
DC Comics

After decades as the Spirit of God’s Wrath, Jim Corrigan finally laid the mantle down and let his soul move on to Heaven. Soon after, the fallen angel Azmodel merged with the Spectre to wage war on Heaven, Hell, and Earth. A group of Earth’s heroes went to Heaven to ask Corrigan to reclaim the mantle but he refused, saying he had finally found peace. The archangel Michael suggested that they go to Purgatory to find a potential host.

The heroes encountered Hal Jordan, who pleaded with them to allow him to right the wrongs that he committed as Parallax. And despite Batman’s enraged objection, he did the job. However, the demon lord Neron hid within Superman on their return from Hell, and Azmodel, Jordan, and Neuron all battled for control of the Spectre.

The Spectre chose Hal Jordan, in part to punish him and in part to burn the Parallax entity from him and cast judgment on the demonic parasite itself. Jordan attempted to change the Spirit of Vengeance to one of Redemption but his efforts failed. The hold of the fear entity was too strong and it tainted the Vengeance entity, making twisted variations on the Spectre’s judgments. Both Jordan and Parallax were eventually removed from the Wraith and it was again without a host for a time.
