10 Worst Things To Ever Happen To Green Lantern
1. Kyle Rayner's Girlfriend Is 'Fridged'
The most horrifying Green Lantern moment arose in 1994's comic run, where new Lantern Kyle Rayner returned home to find his girlfriend murdered and stuffed in the fridge.
Alexandra DeWitt, an LA-based photographer, was Kyle Rayner's girlfriend and confidant when he received his new powers. Helping him design a new costume and train to be a better hero, their relationship on the page was unfortunately short-lived.
Hoping to draw Green Lantern out to fight him, insane supervillain Major Force broke into Alexandra and Kyle's home and strangled her, before throwing her body into the fridge for Rayner to find.
Attacking Major Force in a fury, Rayner almost lost the battle when his power ring ran out of charge. He managed to get the upper hand on the villain and recharge his ring before Major Force managed to kill him too.
A particularly brutal moment in comic book history, this unexpected death led to fan outcry. Gail Simone (who was covering the industry at the time, before going on to become a revered comic book creator in her own right), took a stance and coined the expression 'Women in Refrigerators', referring to a trend where male heroes lose a female character they are close to - usually in a brutal manner - in order to progress their storyline.
This is unfortunately true of several entries on this list, with several Lanterns losing their significant others and offspring.
These are just some of the tragedies the various Green Lanterns have had to endure throughout their eighty-year history. However, in these blackest nights, these shining heroes have always managed to fight another day.
