10 Worst Things To Ever Happen To Green Lantern

9. Guy Gardner's Power Battery Mishap

Green Lantern Fire
DC Comics

Back-up Green Lantern Guy Gardner found himself the victim to a series of unfortunate events following a faulty power battery blowing up in his face.

During 1979's Green Lantern series, Hal Jordan's power battery was damaged by the villainous Crumbler. Unable to warn his friendly rival in time, Hal watched as Guy was seemingly obliterated by the battery.

Following his supposed death, Hal helped Guy's girlfriend grieve by falling into a relationship with her, and almost marrying her. Gardner had actually survived and had been transported by the exploding battery to the Phantom Zone. There he'd been tortured by the resident General Zod, an archenemy of Superman.

Managing to interrupt the wedding telepathically, Gardner wasn't all that happy to see that his friend and girlfriend had clearly moved on. Still, he was trapped without anyone able to help him.

Zod's torture and the aftermath of the battery explosion had irreparably damaged Guy. When he finally escaped the Phantom Zone, he was diagnosed with brain damage and rendered comatose for several years.

Gardner was later revived by the Guardians of the Universe to help fight the Anti-Monitor, but the brain damage had left him with the arrogant and unstable personality we're familiar with today.
