10 Worst Things To Ever Happen To Green Lantern

5. Hal Jordan's Home Is Destroyed

Green Lantern Fire
DC Comics

Since Hal Jordan's first appearance in 1959, California-based Coast City was Green Lantern's home.

Following the nineties Death of Superman arc, the alien tyrant Mongul and the unstoppable Cyborg Superman laid waste to the city, decimating its entire population of seven million. Included in the onslaught were some of Hal Jordan's closest friends, colleagues, and even his first girlfriend.

A recently resurrected Superman managed to coax the villains away from the city and defeat them, just as Hal Jordan returned from a mission in space. Without any knowledge of the events, Jordan discovered the crater upon returning home and was overcome with shock and guilt.

With his imagination amplified by his power ring, an emotionally unstable Hal tried to resurrect Coast City. Only managing to rebuild his home for a few moments as a hologram, the Guardians of the Universe revoked his powers. Claiming the ring was not to be used for personal gain, Jordan became enraged and used the last of his energy to fly to Oa.

Grief-stricken and with nothing left to lose, Hal prepared to wage war with the Guardians and force them to save his city.
