12 Captain America Moments That Shocked The World

5. The Death Of Captain America

Marvel Comics

In the beginning of the Civil War comic storyline, a mutant with explosive powers called Nitro detonated himself near a school, killing 600 people (including 60 children).

This tragedy convinced the government to pass the Superhuman Registration Act so superheroes had to work directly for the government. Cap refused to, believing it compromised everything that a superhero stands for. It also meant that superheroes had to reveal their secret identity, leaving people like Spider-Man vulnerable.

As a result, Cap became a fugitive and was hunted down by his former friends, including Iron Man. After several superheroes were killed, Rogers believed he was causing more harm than good by fighting his friends and so, gave himself up.

While walking to his trial, Cap was shot by Crossbones with a sniper rifle. However, Crossbones wasn't trying to kill Cap. He was creating a diversion.

While everyone was running around frantically, Cap's partner, Sharon Carter, ran up to Rogers and shot him in the heart at point-blank range. Carter didn't realise that she was brainwashed by Doctor Faustus; a hypnotist who uses sleeper agents to commit crimes on his behalf.

Despite the fact that Cap was rushed to hospital immediately, he was dead on-arrival.
