5. Captain Marvel
Over the years, there have been several characters to bear the name, Captain Marvel... including one in DC Comics, but that's another story. The current Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, is certainly the most popular of them all, though she only recently regained the title back in 2012.
Originally, Danvers operated under the name Ms. Marvel, but jumped about as various identities since she debuted back in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 in 1968. Danvers has been known as Binary, Warbird, and interchangeably as Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel at numerous times during her crimefighting career.
The character saw a resurgence in popularity thanks to a revamp of sorts back in the early 2000s. She continued with new looks and killer books for the next decade and now looks to be the savior of the MCU.
Danvers is another strong female character fans have loved for decades and her appearance on the silver screen is another positive move for the character. Danvers has always been a fascinating character due to her rather unique origin story, the use of time-travel, and the dangerous villains she constantly battles. While her look may have changed (many times) over the years, she remains a fan favorite within the Marvel Universe and will likely only gain popularity thanks to the MCU.
