More than 20 years after the fact, DC'€™s €œDeath of Superman€ storyline remains one of the most important moments in comic book history.

It is very rare for a comic book story to be headline news on an international outlet like CNN, but that€™'s exactly what happened when Superman #75 was released in 1992. The comic was issued in a special €œcollector'€™s edition€ black polybag which also sported Superman'€™s iconic €œS€ symbol dripping with blood. The hysteria surrounding this issue was at such a fever pitch, speculators hoarded copies in hopes that it would exponentially increase in value. When Superman was resurrected less than a year later, the bubble burst. Today most people can find copies of Superman #75 in the bargain bin of their local comic book shop.

As for the battle itself between Superman and Doomsday, the Dan Jurgens/Brett Breeding creative team managed to craft a dramatic, action-packed slugfest filled with dynamic splash pages. It ends on the memorable image of Superman'€™s bloody and bruised body lying in the carnage while Lois Lane weeps. But make no mistake €“- it€™'s the story surrounding the comic that makes Superman vs. Doomsday such a watershed moment for the industry.
