After many years, Matt Murdock successfully exposed Wilson Fisk as the Kingpin of Crime and had him sentenced to jail. Due to his influence in the corrupt legal system, Fisk got out several months later.

Since Fisk's wife, Vanessa, passed away while he was in prison, his passion as the Kingpin faded. With the fire inside him burned out, he retired to Spain.

While there, he fell in love with a woman called Marta and moved in with her and her children. Fisk had several incidents where he could killed someone but he refused to since he was trying to bury his dark nature.

After several months of peace, he returned home to learn that Marta and her children were killed by the ninja clan, The Hand. They told Fisk that he was destined to be surrounded by death and he could never have a normal life. They brought him back to America, hoping he would lead their clan.

To stop this from happening, Daredevil decided to lead The Hand under the condition that they have no affiliation with Fisk ever again. With the ninja clan in New York, Fisk thought this was a perfect opportunity to reclaim his throne as the Kingpin.
