In the 2003 story, Unthinkable, Doctor Doom acknowledges that he has taken the wrong path in life. As a teenager, he was so fixated with science, he deserted his sweetheart to study in America. He knows it was this choice that turned him into a deformed, hated dictator who has been humiliated repeatedly by the Fantastic Four.

Realising his error, he tracks down the girl he abandoned, Valeria, and asks her if she could help him make the right choice. At this point, the reader assumes Doom is quitting his villainous persona to be with his one true love.

But die-hard fans know that Doom would never do such a thing. When Doom said he chose the wrong path, he meant he should have chosen sorcery, not science. To master the dark arts, Doom had to sacrifice someone he loved. After he killed Valeria, he carved an enchanted armour from her carcass (because he's crazy) and became one of the world's most powerful sorcerers.

Although Reed Richards is the world's smartest man, he is clueless when it comes to magic. Since he relies on solving problems scientifically, he's ill-equipped s against Doom's ability to conjure spells and summon demons.

Very rarely is Richards depicted as anything except the smartest person in the room. This story is a classic as it shows the leader of the Fantastic Four at his most vulnerable and Doom at his most mighty.
