13 Inappropriate Moments That Prove Comics Are Made By Total Perverts

12. Sloppy Seconds

Miscommunication can be a funny thing: words and phrases often mean different things in different countries, and olden day phrases don't always carry the same meaning. We've already briefly discussed the misappropriation of the word gay in older comics, and how we shouldn't laugh simply because a word has changed meaning over time, but there are some examples that are beyond baffling. For instance, there are a number of instances in comic book movies when a hero caught in the moment of beating up a bad guy will mention wanting to have "sloppy seconds" from another hero fighting another foe. Clearly, that phrase means something different today, thanks to the rather morbid sexual connotations it conjures, but you have to wonder exactly what gave rise to the phrase in its old meaning in the first place. Obviously, there's nothing sexual about it when Spider-Man or The Thing demand sloppy seconds, but there is definitely something inherently rude about the word "sloppy" regardless of olden days people suggest.
