13 Truths Comic Book Fans Would Never Admit To Themselves

4. You Loved The 90s

What You Say: The 90s were by far the worst era for comics. The proliferation of gimmicks like variant holographic chromium covers, trading cards, and whatever else to make idiot speculators think that these things would be worth more than a quarter. The elevation of artists to superstars while writers were ignored and kicked to the curb. And the endless €œevents€ that nearly destroyed great characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Superman. And the €œgrim €™n€™ gritty€ trend that saw a parade of €œbadass€ heroes with bulging muscles and guns bigger than their torsos. But What You Really Mean: You own those comics. You€™ve got back-issue bins loaded with copies of WildCATS and Spawn and X-Force and any other 90s-era title. And you loved those books. You still love them. Every now and then, you€™ll kick back and re-read those issues. Sure, they€™re far from being the greatest stories ever told, but damn if they aren€™t fun. The equivalent of watching a marathon of B-movies on Netflix. It wasn€™t just people who thought they would be able to put their kids through college buying those comics, regular readers were, too. And they kept buying them for a time. The only reason they would have would be if they did enjoy them on some level.
