14 Little Known Comics Stats That'll Blow Your Mind
13. There Have Been Over 10 'Weapons'
James 'Logan' Howlett has a lot of monikers for a superhero. He's Wolverine, Canucklehead and (least famously) Wildboy, but most will know him as the eponymous 'Weapon X' - his government designated codename that came in the wake of the experiment that gave the character his adamantium skeleton.
It's more than just a pun or throwback to the wider X-Men universe, however. Instead, the X takes on its latin meaning, which makes Wolverine the tenth 'Weapon' in the Weapon Plus program. Who are the other victims of the group's experiments? Some are widely known, but the rest? Not so much.
Due to the fact the Plus program was inspired by Project Rebirth from World War II, the first 'weapon', so to speak, is Steve Rogers. Due to the fact that leading scientist Abraham Erskine was murdered before he finalised his research, the super soldier serum depleted. What followed was a malicious programme sanctioned by the government that experimented on unwilling participants in an attempt to recreate Captain America's success (chronicled in Truth: Red, White & Black), and then another programme, which seemingly birthed Howard the Duck and Rocket Raccoon.
Other names attributed to the Weapon Plus programme include Deadpool, Fantomex and the Stepford Cuckoos, so maybe Wolverine isn't that special after all...
