12. Captain Atom Being Killed By The Atom
One of the most canonically powerful superheroes in the DC universe, it was hard not to be surprised by Captain Atom's death; both in the fact it happened, and how it happened.
As Captain Atom doesn't succumb to any conventional zombie. No, he dies to The Atom, who shrinks down until he can tear a minuscule chunk of the Captain's heart out. Even this microscopic wound is enough to infect the blue hero, which creates even more problems for those uninfected - as this pierces Captain Atom's armored skin, which starts to release the 'atomic fire' he has contained within.
It's perhaps one of the most crucial moments of the series, as it establishes that nobody is safe from the ongoing epidemic, even those who you'd normally expect to be able to tough the whole thing out.
Weirdly, Batman #76 also featured Captain Atom being brutally beat down the very same day - proving that sometimes it's just not your week, even when you're a blue atomic superhero.
