14. The Death And Return Of Alfred Pennyworth

It's true that Alfred Pennyworth is Bruce Wayne's longest-serving, most reliable comrade. Having been there from the start of the Dark Knight's career, he's saved Batman's bacon a few times himself (as well as providing light refreshments and medical care). It's also true that DC got sick of his face sometime in the sixties.
June 1964's Detective Comics #328 saw Alfred killed off, pushing Batman and Robin out of the way of a falling boulder the self-proclaimed World's Greatest Detective probably should have noticed before his elderly man servant. Anyway, there was no time for them to mourn afterwards, because there was a new villain on the scene!
The Outsider had bone-white skin, superhuman strength, psychic powers and a burning hatred for the dynamic duo. He also had a suspiciously similar build and (dead give-away) moustache to the dearly departed Alfred. Turns out a mad scientist resurrected him and so, the butler was a major villain for several years. And it was stupid.
