10. Faceless Nutball Joker

You don't have to do much with the Clown Prince Of Crime to make him creepy. He's already a clown, for one thing, the most terrifying of circus creatures (which says a lot when big tops frequently house bearded women and tigers). The fact that he's a clown that kills people? Brother, Stephen King built a best-selling horror career on that premise.

There's a strange sense of one-upmanship in DC, however, with everyone striving to find how they can make The Joker even creepier. Heath Ledger's Dark Knight portrayal look set to take the crown of the most horrifying, unhinged Joker in history. Right up until the moment DC decided that the character should have his face cut off.

Why? Who knows? How? That's also up for debate. A fellow Arkham resident carves the skin of The Joker's face off, but he somehow survives nonetheless. And then wears the dead skin as a mask. Seems like a bit of a waste of time. It's also unnecessary and doesn't actually make The Joker creepier, and needlessly gory and violent for a superhero comic.
