He's already a clown, for one thing, the most terrifying of circus creatures (which says a lot when big tops frequently house bearded women and tigers). The fact that he's a clown that kills people? Brother, Stephen King built a best-selling horror career on that premise.

There's a strange sense of one-upmanship in DC, however, with everyone striving to find how they can make The Joker even creepier. Heath Ledger's Dark Knight portrayal look set to take the crown of the most horrifying, unhinged Joker in history. Right up until the moment DC decided that the character should have his face cut off.
