It might seem tempting to seek out these altogether inappropriate Batman comics after finishing this list, to see for your own eyes if they're really that bad. And if you take only one thing away from this list, it should be the warning that you really ought never, ever, in a million years, read Kevin Smith's Batman: The Widening Gyre.

Quoting a Yeats poem in the title is pretentious, and Smith's story absolutely doesn't make good on its use. In fact, the whole comic is an exercise on heaping buckets of the profane atop the sacred, beginning with Batman's own history. Origin story Year One is one of the most iconic Dark Knight stories ever told, with plenty of classic moments.

Best amongst them is the young Batman interrupting a gangsters' dinner and informing them their time is up. Badass. So, naturally, The Widening Gyre includes a moment where Batman admits years later that he was absolutely terrified at that moment. So terrified, in fact, that he wet himself.

Even as a Bat-Baby, he didn't wet himself.
