Created by the New God Metron, Mother Boxes are living computers that make up the backbone of Jack Kirby's Fourth World. As sentient beings, they are capable of wide variety of abilities that endow the New Gods with their enhanced powers.

Their most famous ability is the projection of multi-dimensional portals called boom tubes. They are the only things capable of bridging the Fourth World with Prime Earth and the first defense against an invasion by Darkseid. On top of that, they can control non-sentient computers, track almost any organism anywhere in the universe, transmute matter, create force fields, give powerful shock attacks, form telepathic connections between lifeforms, and protect their users from the vacuum of space.
