8. He Hasn't Always Been Captain America

In the 1970s, Steve Rogers decided to give up being Captain America following the real-life Watergate Scandal. This was a clever move by Marvel to tie his series into current day events, and he became Nomad in response to no longer being proud of his country. That wasn't the only time Cap gave up the mantle though as he would go by just "The Captain" at one point in the '90s after once again losing faith in the USA. Years later, he served as the "Super Soldier", letting someone else serve in his place while he ran S.H.I.E.L.D. That costume actually inspired the one seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
