Superman battled the KKK and Nazis, but the US government also found fault with the character during World War II. When Lex Luthor launched an attack against Superman with what he called an "atomic bomb" (which actually had little to no resemblance to an actual atomic bomb), the War Department demanded that the story's publication be delayed. When Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed, they also censored a story featuring Superman filming an atom bomb test for the Army.
