5. Astonishing X-Men Featured Comics' First Gay Wedding
Astonishing X-Men didn't last long after Joss Whedon left, but the series made headlines in 2012 when it featured the first gay marriage in the history of comic books. This took place between Northstar (a superhero who also made headlines two decades earlier when it was revealed by Marvel that he was gay) and his partner Kyle. This was a topical storyline which saw the publisher praised for embracing diversity after gay marriage was made legal. It was appropriate that this took place in the pages of an X-Men comic book as prejudice against mutants has often been compared to people's prejudice against the LGBT community.
