Grant Morrison's New X-Men run isn't short on badass moments, up to and including the shocking reveal that new mutant Xorn - a rescuee from a Chinese prison who had a star for a brain and a Zen-like temperament - was actually the villainous Magneto, who had successfully infiltrated Xavier's School and brought it down from the inside. In the climactic Planet X storyline he planned to destroy humankind forever, leaving Earth solely for his mutant brethren - except, obviously, for the X-Men, who'd be doing their level best to stop him. He came close, too, marooning Beast and Emma Frost in the middle of the ocean and seemingly leaving Cyclops, Jean Grey and Wolverine to their doom in outer space. Once again the master of magnetism underestimated his enemies, who clawed their way back to his Manhattan base for a final showdown. At this point Scott Summers had suffered yet another loss of his perpetually dying and resurrecting wife Jean, which left him a little on edge. The normally stoic and straight laced team leader took the initiative in bringing down Magneto, asking if it was just "psychic attacks" the bad guy's helmet blocked out - before firing a shot of his laser vision right into his face. That's pretty hardcore. Oh yeah and then Wolverine decapitated him, but you expect that sort of thing from him.
