20 Worst Ever Comic Book Sidekicks

9. H.E.R.B.I.E. (The Fantastic Four)

First Appearance: Fantastic Four #209 (August 1979) Due to an issue with the rights, the creators of the 1978 Fantastic Four animated series were unable to use the Human Torch as a member of the team. That was probably a good call, as a guy who sets himself on fire may not be the best role model Marvel have ever cooked up. However, replacing Johnny with a R2D2 rip off called H.E.R.B.I.E. clearly wasn't the right choice either. H.E.R.B.I.E. was soon integrated into comic book continuity and after initially helping the FF with day to day crime fighting, later years saw his character evolve into a nanny like figure who monitored Reed and Sue's son Franklin, as his powers sometimes went out of control. The acronym stands for Humanoid Experimental Robot, B-type, Integrated Electronics... obviously.
