4 Reasons Why Batman Must Be Considered An Anti-Hero

Batman Unwanted On September 16th, 2003 What Culture published my last feature 10 Human Comic Book Anti Heroes You Don't Want To F**k With ... Ever!. In this feature I examined 10 of the roughest, toughest 'good guys' in the history of comics - not including mutants, super humans etc. - that you would never wish to cross if you were a bad guy and in some cases even as a regular person with no crime affiliations. For the most part you all agreed with my choices with one or two of you suggesting alternate choices (Tank Girl, Dylan Dog, Spider Jerusalem) and others completely missing the point and insisting on Wolverine and Venom. One choice in particular upset a lot of you more than any other. That was my pick for the number one spot, DC's Dark Knight himself The Batman. As the comments (positive and negative) began to flood in I sat back in my chair and revelled at the debates that ensued. It was clear that daring to call Bruce Wayne's alter ego an anti hero was a crime against superfandom and I should be strung up by my ankles and pelted with batarangs and all manner of other implements wielded by angry fan boys the world over for even suggesting such a thing. Undeterred by the torrents of abuse I've (not really) received I stand by my statement and if anything I am even more convinced that my argument is correct. However, the arguments in the comments thread do deserve further investigation which is why I am now putting the subject out to all of you to debate amongst yourselves. To help you along I shall provide evidence to further nurture the idea and hopefully we will be able to settle once and for all whether Batman really is an anti hero. So let's begin.
