5 Common Comic Book Questions With Obvious Answers
2. Can Magneto Lift Thor's Hammer?
Here we have your typical case of an unstoppable force vs an immovable object. In one corner, we have Magneto, the high powered mutant and chief adversary of professor Charles Xavier and his X-Men. In the other, we have Mjolnir, the weapon of choice for Thor, the god of thunder.
So, can Magneto, a being of almost limitless control over magnetism lift Thor's hammer? On the surface, the question almost seems like a paradox and a matter of perception. However, the answer is clear: No, Magneto can't lift Mjolnir.
It is true that Magneto has used Mjolnir before, but it was during an alternate universe and involved controlling the environment around the hammer, instead of lifting the hammer itself. There isn't a history of Magneto achieving this feat in the 616-continuity, which is the established canon.
Some seem to misunderstand what gives Mjolnir it's seemingly infinite weight. Thor's hammer is impossible for most to lift not because of its' material, but of the enchantment placed upon it, stipulating that only those deemed worthy can wield it.
Magneto joins incredibly powerful characters that have been unable to lift the weapon unassisted or through technicality, such as the Hulk and Thanos. Lifting Mjolnir isn't a test of power and strength, but of character.
