1. The Death Of Wolverine
Let's face it, it's almost impossible to get through a major event, or even a minor one, without someone dying. Maybe they'll be killed early on, to indicate just how dangerous the current threat is; maybe they'll die at the climax in a heroic sacrifice; or maybe they'll be killed off just for the sake of publicity and sales figures. There are some who think that Marvel only killed off Wolverine to spite Fox, but actually, the character's death made perfect sense for the publishers. Love him or hate him, there's no denying that Wolverine had grown to be a central part of the Marvel Universe. Not only did he appear in literally dozens of titles, he had a lead role in many of them. Killing him off left a notable absence in everything from Astonishing X-men to Uncanny Avengers, forcing writers and characters alike to fill his space. Because Wolverine tended to dominate just about everything he appeared in, killing him off allowed previously underplayed characters such as Storm, Rogue, and X-23 to step into the limelight. But because death is pretty much the comic book equivalent of having an extended holiday, it's only ever a matter of time before the dearly departed come back again. Wolverine has already died in the past, and it hardly stuck. Jean Grey has died and come back so many times she must have a season ticket to the Underworld. Having teased the character's death for months, there were rumours of Wolverine's return doing the rounds even before Death of Wolverine had reached its conclusion.
