5. The Star Wars
Dark Horse ComicsStar Wars is a franchise that everyone knows and loves, but the massively influential galaxy Lucas created was almost a very different place - and Dark Horses The Star Wars allows you to see what could have been. Following George Lucas original script and vision for the film, The Star Wars gives us a glimpse into what everyones favourite galaxy was originally destined to become. From places to vehicle designs and even major story arcs things here arent what youd expect. But surely certain story tropes will remain the same, right? Wellno, not really. This is a vastly different take on the Star Wars universe: here, Darth Vader is no longer a Sith lord, Anakin is the main character, and R2-D2 talks. While initially it may all feel fairly blasphemous, there is a strange thrill in discovering this new yet familiar universe. Each issue takes us to locations and shows us characters that are recognisable, but turns them on their head. The thrill of seeing a familiar universe full of unexpected story twists makes this a series that continues to shock and delight in equal measure. The Star Wars features superb art and brilliant writing throughout that really bring this alternative universe to life, and this combination of quality, familiarity and the complete unknown are what makes it one of the most exciting new comic series around. If youre pretty OCD or not a fan of change this is probably one thats best to avoid. For open minded Star Wars fanatics (if they exist) and even those just looking to try something a bit different however, this is most definitely a series worth checking out.
