7 Best Comics Series For Newcomers

3. American Vampire

Skinner ArmyVertigoA vampire story set in the wild west, with a focus on genuinely horrifying vampires (sorry Twilight fans) is something that was always going to pique comic readers' interests. But once you throw Vertigo and Stephen King into the mix, American Vampire becomes a proposition that simply can€™t be ignored. American Vampire tells the bloody tale of the old world clashing with the new, of a girl chasing the American dream while blood curdling monsters mercilessly slaughter all around them. While Stephen King only wrote the first few issues, the quality doesn€™t dip with his absence €“ and that€™s largely down to the consistently well written panels from Scott Snyder. Featuring stunning artwork, unique and relatable characters, and by far the most horrifying portrayal of vampires of recent times, this is simply a must read. While American Vampire is currently in its second run (imaginatively titled The Second Cycle), the original volumes are still widely available, and well worth the £8.99 they go for on Amazon. If you€™re looking for something dark, well written, action packed and with a healthy dose of fangs€“ this is definitely the series for you.
