2. The Wake
A tale about sea creatures devastating our planet doesnt necessarily sound like the most compelling premise, but when helmed by the brilliant Scott Snyder it becomes something entirely unmissable. The American Vampire writer is again on top form here, with the dark atmosphere and pacing of the story taking notes from 80s horror classics Aliens and The Thing. The unique meld of present day story telling and a dystopian and slightly fantastical future creates a rich and immersive universe that you cant help but find yourself enthralled by. Its not just the stellar writing that makes this series so enjoyable though - a lot of the comics charm comes from The Wakes jaw dropping art style. Every one of Murphys beautifully drawn panels are dripping with atmosphere, featuring some truly stunning detailed shading that melds perfectly with Snyders dark and non linear story telling. Touching on everything from horror to fantasy, this gloriously unique post apocalyptic world is one that is very much investing your time in. If youre looking for a comic with rich story telling, a unique setting, bleak but gripping art and something on the more adult side of the spectrum then this is a comic you can't do without.
