7 Black Comic Creators To Check Out
3. N.K. Jemisin
If you've heard of Jemisin outside of comics, it will likely be for her multiple award winning fantasy series The Broken Earth Trilogy, which made Jemisin the first black person ever to win the Hugo award for Best Novel, which she then won again for two more consecutive years.
Her comic book debut came in 2019 when she created a new Green Lantern character for DC, who debuted in her own series Far Sector, as part of DC's Young Animal imprint. The character, Jo Mullein, is a rookie Green Lantern, not officially part of the corps, but off on a covert mission the other Green Lanterns don't know about, to solve the first murder in centuries in a technological utopia.
The artist on the series, Jamal Campbell, was inspired by the 'afro-futurist' aesthetic when designing the character and world, giving the series a distinct look that along with the writing, has had excellent reviews since it started, with the 6th issue (of a planned 12) recently being released.
