8 Awesome Alan Moore Moments That We Didn't Get To See On Film

7. Evey Working As A Prostitute - V For Vendetta

In the film adaptation of V for Vendetta, Evey (played by Natalie Portman) is a vivacious young woman who works at the state-run BTN television station. Although she questions some of the work that she does, as well the actions of her government, she is a woman that clearly has her life in order. The Evey of the graphic novel, though, is quite a different person. She is 16 and has lost her family to Norsefire, and makes a meagre living working in a factory. When we first see meet her she is staring forlornly into her mirror, readying herself for her first night of working as a prostitute so as to gain some much needed money. As the reader follows Evey out into the street we see her first attempt at soliciting a client. It is a clumsy affair which causes the would-be male client to make fun of her, but embarrassment turns to terror for Evey when the man reveals himself as a member of Norsefire's secret police. Several other officers emerge and prepare to rape and murder Evey, before the mysterious V appears on the scene to rescue her with his deadly mix of explosives and alliteration. This part of the scene does appear in the film, though in the movie the Evey was not saved by V when heading out to work as a prostitute, but was instead out walking to meet TV star Gordon Deitrich. The change in the nature of this scene is the most glaring example of how Evey's character was altered in the adaptation. Instead of a scared and desperate girl, we get a strong woman who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This lessens the impact of Evey's character arc, making the personal journey that she goes on while assisting V with his "terrorism" a much shorter, and ultimately, less satisfying one.
