8 Awesome Alan Moore Moments That We Didn't Get To See On Film

6. Rorschach's Psychiatrist - Watchmen

For so long it seemed like Alan Moore's epic Watchmen would never make it to the big screen, with the brilliant graphic novel classified as "unfilmable" by all and sundry. Directors such as Terry Gilliam and Paul Greengrass tried to get the project off the ground and failed, before finally Zack Snyder was able to bring the story to life. For Watchmen to work as a single film, though, certain plotlines were always going to have to be cut. The graphic novel is a wild, sprawling work that covers multiple decades and hundreds of characters. One of sub-plots that ended up getting trimmed was the one focusing on Rorschach's prison psychiatrist, Malcolm Long. In the film we see Long interviewing Rorschach, but we never get to see the effect that the interviews have on the psychiatrist. The graphic novel shows us this, however, taking the reader into the psychiatrist's personal life and making it clear just how much Rorschach's case is messing with his head. On one occasion, some dinner guests start to tease Long about Rorschach. Unamused, Long tells them in detail about a criminal that Rorschach discovered had killed a little girl and fed her to his dogs. This results in Long getting involved in an argument with his wife, and then eventually splitting up with her. The strength of the plotline is that it shows just how much darkness Long has to look into, and the effect that looking into such darkness can have on even the most stable of people. The last time we see Long he and his wife are trying to make amends, only for the appearance of Adrian Veidt's monstrous alien creature to put a sudden, deadly, squidy halt to proceedings .
