So, remember Mariko Yashida? Wolverine's wife-to-be was tragically murdered by criminal rival Matsu'o Tsurayaba, a former member of The Hand, and someone Logan took particular pleasure in destroying.

Mariko was Wolverine's everything, and when he finally tracked Matsu'o down, he decided to savour the experience. Each year, on the day Mariko passed away, Logan would hunt Matsu'o and cut off a part of his body. Wolverine promised to do this until Matsu'o had no more body parts to slice off, which is more than a little disturbing and sadistic, but you know, you get what you pay for when it comes to Wolvie.

Over the years, Matsu'o loses a hand, an ear, his nose, and by the time we see the character in 2010's Psylocke series, he's effectively more machine than man. He's not looking so hot by any stretch of the imagination, and years of Wolverine's torture has left him with a death wish.

Wolverine actually fought with Psylocke just so that he could prolong Matsu'o's suffering, but relented when he realised how much she wanted to have her own revenge too. Matsu'o is killed shortly afterwards by Psylocke, bringing to an end years' worth of torment at the hands of Logan.
