8 Completely Implausible Superhero Origin Stories

3. The Hulk

The Origin: You€™ll all know at least the bare bones of The Hulk€™s origin by now, thanks to the various movies on the topic and his inclusion in the Avengers movie. Dr. Bruce Banner, a brilliant but reserved physicist was exposed a gamma beam from a nuclear bomb of his own creation. Shaken, but strangely fine, Banner later discovers that he turns into a hulking green monster every time he gets even slightly pissed off. If there was ever a reason to avoid watching Jersey Shore, eh? In Reality: You could probably have guessed this outright, but being exposed to radiation is not advisable, particularly Gamma radiation, which is especially dangerous as it€™s extremely difficult to shield from (presumably why the Marvel Universe Military were so keen to make a Gamma Bomb). While it€™s true that Gamma radiation has DNA altering properties, that€™s not as awesome as it might sound. A study carried out on Russian nuclear workers who had been exposed to gamma radiation at high cumulative doses showed an undeniable link between this exposure and basically every type of cancer you can possibly be stricken with. And not a single superpower among them. (Source: World Nuclear). In reality, there€™s a very good chance Bruce Banner €“ who was exposed to a high concentrated dose - may have survived his encounter with the gamma rays. There€™s also a good chance he€™d have been riddled with so many different types of cancer, that he€™d wish he hadn€™t. More likely though, he€™d have melted into a puddle of pinky red goo on the ground, or something equally as horrific.
