4. Parliament Of Trees - Older Than Man Himself

Swamp Thing Parliament Of Trees
DC Comics

Swamp Thing is one of the best comics in DC's library, and the man chiefly responsible for that success is Alan Moore.

Moore pretty much re-worked the entire mythology behind the character when he took the reigns on the series in the eighties, and began by introducing something known as the Parliament of Trees. They are said to have existed since before man walked the Earth, and are all modelled on various different generations of life to have occurred throughout Earth's evolutionary history, with one of the oldest sentient trees among them being a trilobite, which existed over 500 million years ago.

Located deep within the Amazon rainforest, the Parliament are a collective conscious of sentient plant-life that stand watch over the environment, and who count Swamp Thing among their members. As of the New 52 there are now also other elemental parliaments on Earth, representing the ocean, decay, fungus, and even rock itself.
