8 Things To Know About The DC Comics Rebirth

7. A Chinese Superman

Amidst all of the shifts to put characters back to how we know them best, the brand new character of Kenji Kong might be the most drastic departure from what we know. Superman is still operating in Metropolis, but halfway around the globe, a new character has somehow gotten similar powers to him.

Billed as the New Superman, this Chinese teen represents the universality of Superman’s character. His ‘S’ shield is an iconic symbol and this series is DC trying to explore just how greatly his influence resonates in a completely foreign culture.

Developed by legendary artist Jim Lee and acclaimed writer Gene Luen Yang, this series seems less like a poor attempt at diversity, and more like a fascinating take on a famous character. Just throwing a token minority into the fray doesn’t accomplish much but telling a thought-out story from a completely different cultural perspective ought to be a memorable experience.

No doubt, there’s the potential for this to bomb spectacularly, but it seems to have been conceived in good faith, and could represent one of the biggest surprises of DC’s new line.
