In December 2009, a soldier named Christopher Lanum, dressed and wearing make-up like The Joker from The Dark Knight, stabbed a fellow soldier stationed at Fort Eustis. Following the attack, Lanum and his girlfriend drove a van through Shenandoah National Park, while being chased by police. Police managed to catch up with Lanum's van, and made attempts to stop the vehicle. During the incident, Lanum pointed a loaded shotgun at them. In response, a trooper fired through the side window of the vehicle, and Lanum fired the shotgun. Police fired several times at the vehicle, leaving Lanum dead and his girlfriend wounded and charged with being an accessory after the fact to assault.
