Ben Urich is one of Marvel's best supporting characters, but like the famous Devil of Hell's Kitchen, he's not had an easy life.
A reporter for the Daily Bugle and one of their few reputable investigative journalists, Urich established himself as one of Daredevil's most trusted allies and as a real threat to Fisk's interests. In Born Again, a despondent Murdock confides in Urich to expose Fisk's bid to terrorise Hell's Kitchen. In response, Kingpin sends one of his enforcers - the terrifyingly creepy Nurse Lois - to break Urich's fingers.
Then, as Urich is about to make a break in his case, the same Lois murders his only lead, placing the phone in full range so he could hear every excruciating detail.
Daredevil might be the Man Without Fear, but Urich is the unsung hero of his story. He's just as brave, and while this run-in with one of Kingpin's goons wouldn't deter him from writing his story, it did make for a chastening encounter.

In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
