Batman Damned Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs
3. John Constantine
Coming in at the number 3 spot on our favourites of Batman: Damned is the (unreliable) narration from John Constantine. It's brilliant. Not only is it written the way he speaks, but there's a dark humour to it that critiques everything currently happening on the page.
His devil may care attitude and arrogance for the material world really puts him at odds with Batman. And it's the difference in the two that makes their partnership so unconventionally satisfying. The cold and calculating nature of Batman and the wild unpredictability of Constantine is a blend that just works wonders for a narrative.
The way his narration floats across the page rather than confined to a stereotypical box makes it seem like the narration is actually a one-way conversation between Constantine and Batman, as if they're mentally or spiritually linked. And it works a treat. "Only the dead don't sleep..."
