Batman: The Animated Series has one of the best array of characters of any superhero series. The cast of heroes and villains are often what makes the series great, with Batman's rogues gallery particularly owning the spotlight.

From brilliant villains such as Mark Hamill's Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Mr Freeze and Two-Face, sometimes it can be hard for Batman to outshine some of these brilliant characters who regularly oppose him and provide him with a challenge.

However, there are multiple characters who have shined that have only appeared once in the entirety of the entire series. These characters have featured as either antagonists or protagonists who, while only appearing in one episode of the show, managed to make an impact and stand out as great characters despite only being briefly in the spotlight.

This list will not be limited to villains, as it features characters who were both friends and foes of the Dark Knight. However, the additions to this list are all characters that made a substantial impact or stood out to audiences in their limited appearance, with some characters even outshining Batman in their time in the sun.

Captain Clown is an android clown who appears as a physical threat Batman must overcome during a battle with the Joker. The World's Greatest Detective discovers that the Joker is flooding Gotham river with laughing gas during April's Fools Day - and the Clown Prince of Crime does this with a garbage barge that spreads the vile concoction through Gotham's waterfront.

The barge is driven by Captain Clown, who is an android with origins unknown. This robot clown battles Batman on multiple occasions during the episode, proving to be more than a match for the Dark Knight.

Captain Clown nearly kills Batman during their first encounter, as Bats has no way of defeating the robot who is resistant to Batman's physical attacks. He even tries to beat the android with a metal pole - all to no effect!

This clown proves to be one of the Joker's strongest ever allies, proving to be a physical and almost invincible threat who pummels Batman with a smile. However, Captain Clown meets his untimely demise when Batman lures him into a car crusher, which results in him being crushed into a cube.

The most iconic part of Captain Clown's appearance may be how heartbroken the Joker is over his "death," as the Clown Prince of Crime yells, "You killed Captain Clown... YOU KILLED CAPTAIN CLOWN!" as he witnesses his most loyal henchmen being crushed into a cube of garbage.

God speed Captain Clown, you will be missed.
