Captain Marvel: 10 Comics Fans Must Read After Seeing The Film

8. The Enemy Within

The Enemy Within
Marvel Comics

If your familiarity with Captain Marvel comes only from the comics, you might be surprised to learn that her comic book origin came about a bit differently. In The Enemy Within, that origin story is looked at once more when Yon-Rogg returns to try and rebuild his Psyche-Magnitron, the very device that first empowered Danvers.

After learning that she has a lesion on her brain, Danvers realizes that she is taking her life in her hands every time she flies into the sky. It turns out, the lesion is caused by Yon-Rogg, as he enters into her mind to try and get at the remains of the Psyche-Magnetron!

Old enemies resurface in this desperate tale about Captain Marvel and her origins. This story helped to ground the otherwise otherworldly character with something as "human" as a brain lesion. It helps to bridge the gap between the superhero and the readers who love her stories in a way that comics rarely attempt.

This is a great book for people who are interested in learning more about the character, but also an amazing read thanks to the brilliant writing of Kelly DeConnick.
