Secret Empire may have made for a gigantic mess both on and off the page, but once character who emerged for the better was Captain Marvel.
Then in control of the space agency known as Alpha Flight (not to be confused with the Canadian X-Men who go by the same name), Carol is trapped outside of Earth's atmosphere when an evil Steve Rogers takes control of the planet. This happens just as the Chitauri begin to mount another invasion of the planet, leaving Carol stranded as the Earth's first and last line of defence.
Danvers is joined by a whole host of cosmic do-gooders, including her colleagues on the Ultimates and the Guardians of the Galaxy, but the burden still falls to her to rally them together and oppose the invasion.
Whilst in space, Carol decimates entire waves of Chitauri, and successfully takes down a Leviathan. Not only that, but she manages to keep everyone on task and refuses to abandon her post even when all hope seems lost. Sure, those usual displays of strength involving the character taking on hoards is all well and good, but sometimes the best way of illustrating Carol's abilities is to note her resolve and mental strength.

In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir.
