How Did He Die?

Speaking of Cable, his death (shortly before Forge's) was as noble as they come. Cable lead an X-Force squad into the future in order to stop a Nimrod Sentinel production line that was attacking mutants in the present. Successful in their mission, the only portal that led back to the present conveniently could only be opened by a non-organic being.

Cable lets the techno-organic virus he's been telekinetically fighting all his life wash over him. He opens the portal, sends his team through, says goodbye to his adoptive daughter Hope who stands on the other side, smiles at her and promptly disintegrates into metallic shards.

How Did He Come Back?

Cable's death was so affecting that it's a shame they brought him back so soon after his passing, especially as it didn't make any sense with what had already transpired. Cable somehow returns to the present with twenty four hours left to live before the techno-organic virus ravages his body - which we already saw happen, but whatever - and is eventually cured by Hope and her Phoenix-fu.

Cable looks up Forge for some bionic enhancements to his severely atrophied arm and eye, and that's when he restores the few sandwiches Forge was short of for a picnic.
