Daredevil: 12 Essential Comic Arcs You Must Read

7. Daredevil: The Typhoid Mary Saga

Ann Nocenti's run on Daredevil introduced readers to Typhoid Mary, a psychotic villainess with multiple personalities. Hired by Kingpin to seduce and, ultimately destroy Matt Murdock, Mary soon proves herself more than up to the task, utilizing her various personalities to jeopardize Matt's romance with Karen Page and giving Daredevil quite the beat-down in the process. Cleverly subverting and deconstructing gender stereotypes and expectations, Nocenti established Typhoid Mary as a multi-faceted character not constrained by traditional gender roles. Not one to be undone by anybody, Typhoid quickly dominated her peers with sheer force and raw, unabashed sexuality, leaving no questions as to who's the head of the pack. And while Typhoid Mary wasn't the only character introduced during Ann Nocenti's run - Shotgun, Bullet, and, most notably Blackheart played various roles as well- it is her inclusion that is perhaps her most lasting contribution to the Daredevil mythos. Never content with doing the expected, Ann Nocenti took Matt Murdock outside of his comfort zone, and made sure the character was fully immersed in the goings-on of the Marvel Universe: from trading blows with the Blob to taking on Ultron, all the while injecting the book with political undertones and tackling the important societal issues of the era.
