Vader's vision of a more hopeful future came about during his attempt to corrupt a kyber crystal - a living mineral that's tied to the Force, and also acts as the power source for lightsabers. Vader acquired this particular crystal by prying it off the cold, dead hands of a Jedi who went by the name Kirak Infil'a.

Kirak was a warrior in self-imposed exile from the Jedi Order, thus escaping the results of Order 66. Vader needed a new kyber crystal to power his Sith lightsaber, and so sought Kirak out to take the latter's crystal.

The ensuing fight proved two things about Vader:

1) Like any good monster, he will always come back.

2) He will do anything to win.

Vader, having no lightsaber of his own, was physically outmatched by Infil'a and found himself thrown off a cliff. Infil'a then made the classic hero mistake of assuming the bad guy couldn't possibly have survived such a fall, and left. Naturally, Vader pulled himself together (literally - he salvaged a new leg from the parts of a nearby droid) and pursued.

When Vader caught up with Karak, he cemented his newfound position as the galaxy's biggest monster by using the force to crack open a nearby dam, dooming the citizens of the town below. While Infil'a desperately tried to hold the water back, Vader used the opening to take Kirak's lightsaber and kill him.

Honourable? No. Effective? Most certainly.
