Jonathan Hickman's X-Men: 5 Reasons To Be Excited

3. A Return To The Mutant Metaphor

One of the elements that most of the recent X-Men books have somewhat shied away from, or handled rather poorly, is the mutant metaphor.

The metaphor, for those who don't know, is the basis on which the team was created; Stan Lee and Jack Kirby used the idea of the team as an analogue to the Civil Rights movement. Since then, the metaphor has continued to hold relevance - the idea that the group are seen as the outsiders in society being one which has drawn many in to the book and made them fall in love with these characters.

As such, the notion that Hickman may be bringing this integral part of the mythos of the X-Men back to the forefront of the team's stories is truly exciting and a much appreciated return to form.
