MCU: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Mephisto
4. The Reality Editor
Having someone this evil be able to alter reality at will is a terrifying concept.
As an otherwordly being, Mephisto is normally depicted as being all-powerful on the astral plane, only making sporadic appearances in the physical realm that aren't fleeting. As 'One More Day', one of Spider-Man's most hated story arcs, shows however, the demon lord can completely reshape reality on Earth.
After Mark Millar threw Spidey under a bus during the 'Civil War' arc by having him unmask, Joe Quesada, the man who banned Wolverine from chomping cigars, stepped in. Determined to restore the status quo of Marvel's most beloved hero, Quesada used Mephisto as a deus ex machina to retcon everything.
With a rather irrational hatred of Peter Parker and Mary-Jane Watson's marriage on tap, Mephisto offered to fix everything for Spidey at a price: the end of their coupling. It was an odd request that didn't seem to really benefit anyone but Parker signed off on it to be saved from the utter catastrophe being friends with Tony Stark had turned his life into.
Spider-Man was rebooted with a whole lot of updates shortly thereafter and Mephisto's powers had reached a new level of impact in the process.
